Celebrating spring in Northern Minnesota is a challenge to say the least! The calendar says it is officially spring March 21, but the outdoors insists on something very different each year. For this reason, many years ago, I began decorating my indoors at the beginning of March, to herald in the seasonal change. Despite the fact that spring often doesn’t emerge in my neck of the woods until mid to late May, why should I miss out on all of the fun? Inside, I happily gather all things spring and fill up my spaces with birds, baskets, blossoms and more, even if there is still snow on the ground.
The melodic sound of birds chirping is the signal for spring each year. Whether it is coming from outside or playing on my phone with instrumental background music they make their appearance one way or the other. Over the years the collection of bird related decor has grown from baskets, wire cloches, birdbaths and houses.

Similarly, birds and nests go hand in hand. Also, decorative eggs make an appearance. On my strolls through my yard it is common for me to spot an empty bird’s nest or two each year in our tree branches. It is fun to collect them and use them for decorating. Last year, to much surprise, this nest was found nestled in my twig wreath outside our front door. It is so charming it has found a permanent home among the branches. Displayed outside are a few weathered birdhouses, which get filled with seasonal foliage throughout the year.

Next, come the baskets and boxes. I love baskets of all kinds: wood, wire, metal, rattan and more. It is so fun to think of new ways each season to fill them. One of my favorite boxes is the tool box my oldest son made me when he was taking construction classes in trade school. It was his first project, which I quickly convinced him of my need for one. Soon after, he was constructing me a new one, as he needed his for tools!

The other containers displayed throughout the house have been collected from thrift shops, craft fairs, and gift shops. I’m always on the lookout for a new vessel to add to my collection. I love filling them with seasonal plants, books, candles, and other cozy touches.

Last, but not least, are blossoms both faux and real. Like most people, real plants and flowers are preferred. However, over the last few years such beautiful, realistic faux blooms have emerged that it is worth reconsidering fake. A one time investment will last for years to come, thus saving time and money. A few real plants and cut flowers sprinkled in bring the whole spring look together and helps cultivate the desire to nurture or grow something while it’s still quite cold outside.

A few days ago, while on a morning walk, a large pile of cut up branches with pussy willows on them were laying in the local park just waiting to be discarded. Quickly, I ran down there with my branch clippers to collect as many as I could. Simple things can bring such joy!

Assembling the collections curated over decades of homemaking is always a fun and creative outlet. From baskets to birds, bunnies, blossoms and more things never look the same around here year to year. Hopefully, you too will be inspired to explore your home and surroundings for timeless treasures to usher in the spring season.
